Supari or betel nuts are commonly used as a mouth freshener and in paans in South and Southeast Asia and the Pacific Basin. Sweet suparis are coated with sugar and flavored with kewda, saffron, etc. They are generally used as an after-meal mouth freshener as they lend a characteristic flavor to the mouth.

It is sometimes used to make medicine. Betel nut is chewed alone or in the form of quids, a mixture of tobacco, powdered or sliced betel nut, and other ingredients.
